Architecture, Landscape Architecture & Industrial Design Lectures

Architecture: "House as Product" Randy Lanou from Buildsense, Inc. will discuss product housing, what's available in the current not-so-pretty housing market, and a possible way to better address the real needs of the people shopping for a ready-made product house. Product houses (houses made for a market segment, not designed for an individual) are the way most of us purchase a new home. Have you found a house that addresses your needs in the subdivision nearest you?

Landscape Architecture: "Attention Shoppers: GREEN light special on aisle 3" Chad Smith of Philip Crawford and Associates will take a look at how we as designers (industrial, landscape and architecture) can deal with environmental issues in our current time through collaboration. This will be a loose discussion looking at current trends and missing links and at how we all can benefit from these and change the world we live in.

Graphic Design: American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), Lecture "Design for Democracy" Featured Speaker, Marcia Lausen In November 2000, one confusing ballot layout awoke the national consciousness to the power of design choices. It also provided a rare opportunity for design leaders, researchers, educators, and students to step forward and demonstrate how design can improve election materials and processes — and help make choices clear.

Marcia Lausen's forthcoming book "Design for Democracy: Election Design," and her ongoing work with the U.S. Election Assistance Commission document the creation of a comprehensive design system available to all states and counties over the last six years. Design for Democracy began as an initiative of AIGA, the professional association for design in the U.S., to apply design principles and solutions to improve government communication. It seeks to use the power of design to increase trust in government, increase the transparency of government activities, and facilitate citizen participation.

AIGA Raleigh and Design Expo Raleigh invite and welcome all who know that good design can truly change the world, to learn about this groundbreaking initiative at a date most relevant and timely.

About Marcia Lausen:
Marcia Lausen is an outspoken advocate for the power of design in corporate, consumer, and civic communications. Her experience in all three sectors is reflected in the client list of Studio/lab, an award-winning multidisciplinary design consulting firm which she co-founded with colleages in San Francisco and Chicago. Professor of graphic design at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Lausen also serves as Director of the School of Art and Design. She received her MFA in graphic design from Yale University and BFA in graphic design from Indiana University. Marcia is currently serving on the AIGA national board. She was named a Fast Company Master of Design in 2004 for her work with Design for Democracy.
